I have a great idea that national charities could use to raise funds while at the same time helping to protect the environment. My concern is that if I approach them with the idea that they will use it and I will gain no compensation for developing it. Can someone suggest what steps I could take to insure that this doesn't happen? Any advice would be greatly appreciated especially from anyone who has experienced a similar situation. I can be contacted at wcoastguynca@aol.com.
Hi Gary - Welcome! While I can understand your desire to protect your idea - perhaps your question is better suited to a business or legal discussion board. This community is about sharing ideas and helping eachother raise money to support our groups. Im sure there are active groups related to patents who could assist you
It's not an idea for a product. There's no patent issue involved. It's a marketing idea for fundraising. The question is how to protect an individual from having an organization "steal" his/her fundraising idea without compensating the individual for having invested the time and effort to develop the idea.
My understanding is that you can not protect an idea. According to copyright.gov:
How do I protect my idea?
Copyright does not protect ideas, concepts, systems, or methods of doing something. You may express your ideas in writing or drawings and claim copyright in your description, but be aware that copyright will not protect the idea itself as revealed in your written or artistic work.
